As I’m exiting my 20s and entering my 30s, skin care has become so important to me, that you could even say I have OCD tendencies about it. I was not blessed by the skin gods and have always battled with skin imperfections. Pigmentation, acne, scarring, and now wrinkles. So, today, I want to talk about what skin care habits are must do habits for every woman, whether you’re 18 or in your 40s, 50s, or 60s. Let’s take control of our skin!
First, let’s talk about the things not to do! Here are my top 3 No-No’s:
Sleeping in makeup.
No matter how tired you are, or how late you stay out. At MINIMUM keep some makeup removing wipes and toner by your bed. But really, you should go through the whole routine to maintain youthful skin. Why? Because when you sleep in your makeup, you are leaving on all of the pollutants from the day and leaving your pores clogged. And right before sleep! Did you know that your body does the most restoration while sleeping? So, help your body out and cleanse before bed.
Clogged pores during a workout.
If you keep up with Parisian Runway, you already know, I’m a girl who sweats. I workout everyday. And while that is great for the body, it can be potentially damaging to your skin and pores. So, this one is easy too. Remove your makeup and go to the gym with a freshly cleansed face. If you’re working out outside, WEAR SUNSCREEN! Sun damage wreaks havoc on your whole body. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!
This is the one I’m most guilty of. You woke up to a fresh new pimple and all you want to do is squeeze the shit out of it… DO NOT DO IT! Under any circumstances. I do it under times of stress, but it’s just not worth it! Why? When you pick/pop a pimple, the bacteria from the pimple can spread to your other pores causing an even larger outbreak. On top of that, the bacteria from your fingers and nails can get inside the pimple’s pore and cause an infection. So, just leave it alone. Put on some spot treatment and call it a day with the blemish.
Ok, now that the negatives are out of the way, let’s talk about what you should be doing.
Wash your face AND NECK with a gentle cleanser morning and night. People always forget to cleanse their neck along with their face. But, did you know the skin on your neck is just as sensitive as the skin on your face and requires the same attention? Think about it, one of the first things older women complain about is their neck.
Use toner morning and night. Your skin needs to repair and restore. The right toner can give your skin a healthy dose of what it needs to look younger, fresher, and smoother, right after cleansing and throughout the day.
Moisturize morning and night. Speak to your aesthetician regarding the best moisturizer for your skin. Keeping your skin hydrated will be your number one defense against aging skin.
As far as products go, I use products from The Aloe Source, Caudalie, and Skinceuticals. From the Aloe Source, I use their Botanical Milk Cleanser, Botanical Toner, the Jojoba Cleansing Polish once a week for exfoliation, and Vitamin C Serum and Moisturizer. I use a night cream from Caudalie called Vinoperfect. And from Skinceauticals, I use their A.G.E. Eye Complex.
Other things to consider adding to your routine:
- Once a week face mask for a good deep cleanse.
- Serum. I use a Vitamin C serum and moisturizer every morning.
- Professional Facials. I do two types of facials; an Extraction Facial every month, and sometimes an acid peel facial. This will give your skin an immediate boost and a great youthful appearance.
- PRP (aka “The Vampire Facial”). I love this procedure. It’s, in my opinion, the best way to keep younger looking skin without the injection of Botox and other toxins. If you have the extra $1200-$2000 to spend on your skin, then try this procedure. On a side note, the micro-needling addition is a must if you do this treatment. We’ll talk more on this procedure in a future post.
What do you guys think? What do you do to keep that skin perfect?
